April RG – Brookend, Purton, Sharpness

Thursday 24th April
Ramblers Group

Brookend – Purton – Sharpness

led by Angela & Jane (see a copy of the poster here)

We will drive to the Lammastide Inn, Brookend, (GL13 9SF) from where we will begin our 5½ mile ramble. Good views of the Severn as we descend into Purton, where we will visit the little Church of St. John. Then we take the towpath alongside the canal, with a detour to see the Purton Hulks on the riverbank and the sight of the old Severn Railway bridge. Leaving the canal by the Marina at Sharpness, we make our way back across bridges and fields. Easy walking with just a couple of inclines, and about 12 stiles.

Lunch at The Lammastide Inn. We can order food before we start off on our walk, but they require numbers so please advise Angela on 832911 if you are coming.

18 members enjoyed a 5.5 mile ramble from the hamlet of Brookend, across fields to Purton where we visited the little church of St. John the Evangelist, before walking alongside the Gloucester – Sharpness Canal.  We saw the Purton Hulks and the remains of the old Severn Railway Bridge which was destroyed in October 1960.  We crossed back over the canal at Sharpness Marina and returned to The Lammastide Inn for our lunch.
